LaTroy Hawkins earned some cheers Tuesday when he debuted a new uniform number, but, more important, he got better results.
The reliever came through to halt the Red Sox in the sixth and seventh innings of a wild game the Yankees would win 15-9. After starting off with some poor performances, Hawkins earned his first win as a Yankee and, they hope, gave them a glimpse of how effective he can be.
But Hawkins' relationship with the Yankees' fan base is off to a shaky start because of his decision to wear No. 21 despite the fans' overzealous protection of icon Paul O'Neill.
